Restless Energy: Stay in the Fight
Daniel holding Restless Co.’s Flagship Performance Energy Blend
The Owner
Daniel Medina's journey to entrepreneurship is rooted in a legacy of service and a firsthand look at the toll of hard labor. Growing up in a small town in California, he watched his father spend a career in construction and his brother serve as a police officer. After receiving an NROTC scholarship, Daniel commissioned as a finance officer in the Marine Corps from 2017-2024.
While transitioning out of the military in September 2024, Daniel realized that the "tactical fuel" many of his peers relied on, sugar-filled energy drinks and ultra-processed snacks which is a recipe for long-term disaster. He observed that these habits led to nutrient deficiencies, chronic fatigue, and even affected personal lives, contributing to issues like divorce and mental health struggles. Determined to find a better way, he leveraged the work ethic of his entrepreneurial mother and his own military discipline to launch Restless Co.
The Product
The development of their flagship Performance Energy Blend was an intensive process involving nearly a year of research, food science collaboration, and exhaustive iterative testing. To ensure the brand’s high standards for quality and transparency were met, Daniel personally made over 100 calls to manufacturers before securing a partner capable of providing a true "turnkey" production solution.
The Science of Focus: The formula features a precise 2:1 ratio of L-Theanine (240mg) to natural Green Tea Caffeine (120mg). This combination is designed to provide "smooth" energy and sustained focus without the jitters or the "sugar-bomb" crash associated with traditional drinks.
Operational Support: Recognizing the toll of sleep deprivation and physical exertion, the blend includes Rhodiola Rosea, an adaptogen that reduces mental fatigue, and Magnesium Bisglycinate for stress response and muscle recovery.
Hydration & Endurance: It contains a 1,000mg electrolyte complex (sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) and Beetroot powder to improve cardiovascular efficiency.
Safety & Trust: Because Daniel intended for his friends, family, and active-duty peers to use the product, he insisted on Informed Sport Certification. This third-party validation ensures every batch is tested for banned substances, making it safe for those in regulated professions.
The Business Model & Economics
Daniel has built Restless Co. as a Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) business, funded entirely by his life savings. This "bootstrap" approach required him to be highly tactical with his finances, as the high quality of his ingredients leads to significantly tighter profit margins than industry standards.
Subscription Strategy: The core of the business is a subscription model. This creates recurring revenue and high Lifetime Value (LTV), which offsets the high Cost to Acquire a Customer (CAC) in the competitive supplement space.
Scrappy Marketing: With limited funds for "fancy" advertising, Daniel relies on authenticity. He used social media to document his "embarrassing" early days of content creation to build a waitlist of 150 people before even having a finished product.
Value-First Pricing: Despite the premium ingredients, Daniel prices the product at less than $2 per serving, aiming to compete with the daily cost of a gas-station energy drink while providing far superior nutritional value.
Operations
Daniel is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, a move he made specifically to acquire the tools to scale his impact. Rather than treating school as a distraction, he has integrated Restless Co into his curriculum.
While technically a solo founder, Daniel utilizes Kellogg’s "New Venture Development" courses to work with student teams. He currently collaborates with an undergraduate named Jack to manage the "Restless Summer" operations.
His schedule is a "hip-pocket" mix of checking bank statements, engaging with his community on social media, and drafting government contracts to get the product into military units.
Constraints
The primary constraint remains capital. Daniel describes moving with "tactical slowness," diligently tracking every ad and messaging test to ensure he isn't throwing money away. However, this hasn't dampened his long-term ambition.
Owner’s Mindset
Daniel’s entrepreneurial spirit is anchored in the "Burn the Ships" philosophy a deliberate commitment to a path with no avenue for retreat. By investing his entire life savings and documenting his journey in the public eye, he effectively engineered an environment where success was the only option. He bypassed the security of a stable corporate career out of a sense of moral urgency, believing that every day spent waiting was another day his community’s health continued to decline.
Looking ahead, Daniel’s vision for Restless Co. extends far beyond the supplement bag. Over the next decade, he intends to bridge the gap between nutrition and biofeedback by integrating the brand into wearable technology. He envisions a future where devices like Whoop or Garmin can detect real-time physiological markers, such as high stress or acute fatigue and immediately trigger a recommendation for a specific Restless formula to maintain operational readiness. Ultimately, he aims to dismantle the "Pop-Tarts and Monsters" culture by developing healthy, functional alternatives that target widespread dependencies on nicotine and sugar-heavy snacks.
For Daniel Medina, Restless Co. isn't just a business; it's a mission to jump into the trenches with the people who work the hardest and ensure they have the tools to survive the long haul.
